Signs You Need a New Faucet

As a homeowner, a decision you’ll have to constantly make is whether to repair or replace major components of your home’s systems. Faucets are a part of this process. You’ll have to judge the current condition of your faucet to determine whether a repair is worthwhile, or a replacement is your best option. This can be difficult to do if you don’t have much experience or knowledge of plumbing systems, but we’re here to help. It’s likely time to replace your faucet if you notice any of the following:

  • It’s Rusty: Rust often builds up inside your faucet where you can’t visibly see it, so it’s essential to look for signs that this may be occurring. If the handle sticks or cracks when you move it or water is slow to come out of your faucet, your faucet is likely rusting internally.
  • It Keeps Leaking: Leaky faucets are an incredible annoyance, especially when it keeps happening after repair attempts. If your faucet is still leaking after multiple tries at fixing it, it’s time to consider installing a new one.
  • It’s Very Old: All faucets are different when it comes to how long they’ll last. However, if yours is more than 15 years old, it’s likely reached the end of its life, so it’s time to install a new one.
  • It Has Heavy Mineral Deposits: If you notice heavy mineral deposits on your faucet, it may be time to replace it. These thick, white deposits can inhibit your faucet’s function and are nearly impossible to get rid of once they form.

How to Pick the Right Faucet

There are many different types, styles, and sizes of faucets available to you. It’s important to remember that just because a faucet looks nice doesn’t mean it will perform well. We’re proud to provide name-brand faucets from companies we trust. They bring excellent use as well as beauty in every style imaginable. Not sure what you need or want? We’re here for you! Our expert team can help you find the faucets that work for your home’s style and function flawlessly for years to come. New faucets function better than older faucets, require fewer maintenance expenses and repairs, and increase the value of your home.

Styles of Sink Faucets

There are four distinct types of faucets based on their inner mechanism. It’s important to know which type you need. The different mechanisms include:

Cartridge

Found most commonly in bathroom sinks, double handle cartridge faucets have one hot water and one cold water handle. Single handle cartridge faucets move up and down for water volume and left to right for temperature control. The cartridge in the handles controls the flow of water.

Compression

Most older homes have these styles. They are also found in utility sinks. You will find two handles for hot and cold water. These require you to tighten the handles to shut off the water flow instead of controlling a cartridge in the handle.

Disc

These are in kitchens and bathrooms. You can identify them by a single lever. It moves a wide, cylindrical body to control the flow and temperature of the water. The disc is found in the handle, controlling the water levels.

Ball

Instead of being controlled by a disc, ball faucets work with a single handle that maneuvers around a rounded cap. These are most popular in kitchens due to their versatility.

How to Detect a Faucet Leak

You may not always notice a leak right away. Not all leaks are obvious, annoying drips that keep you up at night. The best way to determine if your home has a leak is to use your water meter. Find your water meter and record a reading from it. Do not use any water in your house for a few hours. Then, take another reading. If the meter moved, it means you have a leak. Even a small leak is a big deal. You can stand to lose a considerable amount of money from the smallest leak if left unchecked. Contact us as soon as you find out you have a leak to avoid costly bills and the issue possibly becoming worse.

At Puget Sound Plumbing, we provide comprehensive service for faucets. In addition to new faucet installation, we can also complete faucet repair for those faucets that leak or do not function properly. Our trained and certified plumbers will be able to identify the problem with your faucet and develop a solution to address it. We encourage you to reach out to us for all your plumbing needs. Please call us today to schedule a service appointment or to request a quote.

Answers to Frequent Questions About Faucet Repair

Puget Sound Plumbing and Heating offers comprehensive plumbing solutions to residents throughout Seattle, WA. Our faucet repair experts can resolve a broad range of common and not-so-common issues because of war and tear or other damage. Your plumbing fixtures, faucets, and appliances deserve the best possible professional care, and a sizable part of offering unbeatable service experiences is providing essential information about your plumbing. We’ll gladly answer your questions about kitchen faucet repair, shower faucet repair, bathroom faucet repair, and even how to repair a leaky faucet. Below, you’ll find answers to some of our most frequent questions from customers:

What Causes a Faucet to Drip?

Faucets come in four types: ball, ceramic disk, cartridge, and compression type. Compression faucets depend on rubber washers to effectively seal their valve seats. These washers can wear out with time and use and require replacement. The other three faucet types may have a neoprene or O-ring seal causing a leak, and we may need to replace these components. Puget Sound Plumbing and Heating’s technicians will gladly explain each repair option in more detail and then resolve your leak with quick and conclusive work.

Can You Repair an Old Faucet?

Our highly trained technicians can repair nearly any fixture and faucet. However, parts may not be available for some older faucets. Additionally, many inexpensive faucets will cost more to repair than purchasing and installing a new replacement faucet. Another problem with older faucets is that some designer faucets aren’t actually repairable because the manufacturers designed them that way. One of Puget Sound Plumbing and Heating’s seasoned team members will gladly guide you through faucet options before purchasing a new one. Our plumbing installation services will have your kitchen or bathroom fully functional again with a fully functional faucet.

What Is the Average Lifespan of a Kitchen Faucet?

Most plumbing products’ lifespans are subject to the wear and tear they endure. However, Puget Sound Plumbing and Heating believes a good-quality kitchen faucet will plausibly last a lifetime. Many factors affect a kitchen faucet’s longevity, such as your water line’s condition, water pressure, and your faucet’s quality.

Does a Faucet Really Need the Plate at the Bottom?

This plate’s purpose is to hide the holes under your bathroom or kitchen faucet a contractor drilled into your countertop. If you don’t have any unused holes in your countertop, a large plate or any plate may not be necessary. We recommend speaking with one of our plumbing technicians and letting us assess your specific situation to determine if you need a plate. Puget Sound Plumbing and Heating always provides honest insight and recommendations for your home’s plumbing, ensuring it works safely and optimally without unnecessary parts or labor.

Is It Better to Repair or Replace a Leaky Faucet?

Puget Sound Plumbing and Heating offers leaking faucet repair and replacement services. Deciding if repairing or replacing your faucet depends on many factors. You may only need to invest in simple repairs for issues like worn-out washers, but some issues call for a replacement to save you money and ensure your faucet works optimally for years. We can help you find and install a new replacement faucet if your current one doesn’t shut off completely, has a low flow or low water pressure, or doesn’t meet your desires for a more contemporary look in your bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room. Contact us today to discuss your faucet issues and updating needs and schedule service at your home.
