While the dreary winter might seem a counterintuitive time for home renovation, many homeowners find the winter a productive time for projects. During the winter, there are not too many distractions, the spring price hike hasn’t hit, and contractors’ schedules are more open than in warmer months. What’s more, it may be easier to get a permit or inspection quickly when fewer people are doing renovations. If you’ve got a home improvement to-do list, here are some projects you might consider knocking out before spring.
- Spruce up your kitchen. Replacing countertops is an ideal winter renovation because it doesn’t require going out into the cold repeatedly. Installing a new backsplash is a great way to update your kitchen over a cold weekend, and even little touches like new cabinet hardware can make a big difference in the room’s overall appearance. Kitchen renovations typically slow down in winter, so you may be able to get a good deal from a contractor on these upgrades if you’re not interested in doing them yourself.
- Brighten things up. Especially when it’s getting dark outside so much earlier, installing new light fixtures can brighten not only your home but also your spirits. Not interested in new lighting? Repainting your interior walls can brighten things as well, and winter is an ideal time to paint because the walls will dry quickly in the less humid air.
- Fix your flooring. Holiday company can be rough on carpeting, so the post-holiday winter months are the perfect time to install something new.
- Renovate your laundry room. When you’re stuck inside because of the weather, you can put your time to good use by deep cleaning and reorganizing your laundry room. It’s easy to make it a more functional and attractive space with some well-placed hooks, shelves, and baskets.
- Attend to the little things. Winter is not a great time to renovate the bathroom because of all the mess and disruption that kind of renovation can cause. It’s easy to make little changes, though, like replacing the bathroom faucet. You can also do small but important things like evaluating smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to see if they need replacing. Another task you may not have considered is adding insulation to your attic or crawlspace. While not a difficult project to complete, it can have a big impact on your comfort and utility bills.
