You don’t want your home’s air conditioning to stop working, especially during the middle of summer. Knowing some of the most common signs that your A/C is going bad is important to keep your family cool and comfortable. Acting before the problem gets too bad could save you money by needing your air conditioning to be repaired instead of replaced. Here are some telltale signs that your A/C is going bad.

  • Air Temperature – You may have noticed that the A/C isn’t as cold as it used to be. If the A/C seems to be blowing room temperature air but not cold or cool air, you have a problem. There are several things that could be wrong including failure of the system’s compressor or low Freon levels. The unit may need to be replaced but could possibly be repaired.
  • Air Flow – If not enough air is coming out of the vents there’s a chance that the compressor is failing. If the air flow is uneven across various rooms in your home it may be a problem with duct work. Debris can collect and obstruct airflow which presents a health risk to your family. You may just need your ducts cleaned or there may be a more serious issue.
  • Strange Noises – If you hear grating, grinding, or squealing noises coming from your air conditioner there could be a serious problem. Have your unit checked out ASAP to avoid a costly replacement.
  • Foul Odors – If you notice pungent odors coming out of the A/C vents there’s a good chance the wire insulation is burnt out. A musty smell is a sign of mold and should also be taken care of right away.

Finding moisture or leakage near the A/C system is another sign something is wrong. If you notice any of these signs, schedule an appointment with Puget Sound Plumbing & Heating at 206-350-0079.
